Trip Description

Cultural Immersion: Undiscovered Japan specializes in authentic travel experiences to traditional Japan. With Undiscovered Japan you will explore cultural and culinary traditions in depth, interact with locals and Buddhist monks, and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of a centuries-old culture largely inaccessible to foreigners. Our Fall 2010 Undiscovered Japan Tour focuses on the Kanazawa and Kyoto regions. Kanazawa is the epicenter of Japan's food culture. Relatively unknown to foreigners, Kanazawa is treasured for Japan's finest seafood from the nearby Sea of Japan, centuries-old sake breweries, and its unique combination of mountain vegetables and locally grown produce. Kyoto is Japan's cultural heart. Formerly the imperial capital, Kyoto boasts more than 2000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, as well as palaces, gardens and architectural wonders. One of Japan's best-preserved cities, Kyoto is the essence of Japan's unique cultural esthetic.

Culinary Adventures: We will introduce you to a variety of Japanese meals including Kaiseki, Japanese course meals, Buddhist vegetarian cooking, Soba and Udon noodles, Okonomiyaki, Japanese style pizza/omelet and more. We will indulge in Japanese sweets and cakes, tour a family-owned sake brewery, and visit a Nishikikoji Food Market, the “Kitchen of Kyoto”.

Undiscovered Japan: Japanese culture extends far beyond food. You'll also explore exquisite Japanese gardens, visit Samurai and Geisha districts, attend traditional tea ceremonies, tour the famous and beautiful Natadera temple escorted by its head priest, relax in natural Onsen hot-spring baths, and enjoy a private mountain top retreat surrounded by lush forest with views to Mt. Hakusan — one of Japan's four holy mountains.
