Our name came from the belief that we would like to introduce parts of Japan where it is well traveled by Japanese on vacation but not yet discovered by foreign travelers. We strongly believe that in-depth interactions with the local Japanese people is the best way to truly experience Japan. Our programs involve experiential learning such as authentic Japanese cooking, creating Japanese pottery, participating in a tea ceremony, or experiencing a Buddhist ceremony.
Norie Kizaki - Founder of Undiscovered Japan
Born in rural, western Japan, Norie Kizaki was raised in the Buddhist monastery her family has administered for generations. A graduate of Tokyo's Obirin University, Norie moved to Colorado 1996 and earned a masters degree in International Intercultural Communications from Denver University. After building a successful career in software consulting, Norie embarked on her next career as an adventure and cultural guide, launching Undiscovered Japan. An accomplished rock and ice climber, as well as an experienced mountaineer, Norie has climbed extensively throughout North and South America and was a member of the 2005 50th Anniversary Women's Himalayan Expedition. Norie is certified by the American Mountain Guiding Association (AMGA) in top rope site management, is a Wilderness First Responder, and has guided rock climbing and mountaineering courses for Outward Bound. Fluent in both Japanese and English, Norie loves introducing clients to the ancient beauty and timeless culture of her native Japan.

If you sign up for our trip, you are likely to meet her. She resides in a small town near Kanazawa city. She helps coordinate complicated logistics in Japan and she often entertains our guests by presenting a tea ceremony. You often see her wearing traditional Japanese clothing, kimono. She is an expert of Japan and Japanese traditions. She is a master of Japanese flower arrangement, tea ceremony, Japanese dance, and kitsuke (how to put on kimono. It is more complicated than you can imagine). She has answers for all of your Japan questions.
